Statement:
Riccardo Attanasio is a Neapolitan artist working and living in south east London.
Ever since childhood, the human expressions in the rejected and the inner-self have been key themes to explore. At an early age, the immense power of mass-media became apparent, in particular the role it plays in forming a democratic consensus..especially in countries such as Italy.
In my work I am choosing variety of mediums to express an idea. Sometimes my work depends from the media I use.
The source of inspiration lies partially in the Japanese art of calligraphy. Whether performed in front of an audience or not, the calligraphic process is always carried out in one act. Mistakes can therefore not be corrected. The basic idea of calligraphy is an action of total clarity.
Riccardo has never felt bound to a particular medium when it comes to expressing an idea, sometimes the work is very dependent on the media which is used.
One form of inspiration emerges in the Japanese art of calligraphy. Whether performed in front of an audience or not, the process of calligraphy is carried out in one immediate act.
Mistakes therefore can not be corrected. A guiding principle within calligraphy is performing an action with total clarity.

It is extremely important that people have the opportunity of seeing the process of execution, which is also classed as art and not merely a final product, and which in this conceptual case remains, not for long, merely a momentary inspiration: the painting that bears witness to a creative process.
Of key importance is that people have the opportunity of seeing the process in execution, which is to be also classed as art and not merely a final product. In this conceptual space which is opened briefly, merely as a momentary inspiration…the painting bears witness to a creative process.
The aim is to draw closer, as much as this is directly possible, the passion of art to society, by means of a poetic process of execution that is in perfect harmony with any environment and the use of nature as the most significant element from which society, as well as art derive.
As much as is directly possible the aim is to draw closer society to the passion of art, by means of a poetic process of execution that can sit in perfect harmony with any environment. Nature is used as the most significant element from which society as well as art derive.
Art is for me philosophy. Philosophy is loving the sapience, it is analysis of human kind and beyond. It is an exploration which comes once our material necessities are satisfied.
Art is philosophy. Philosophy is loving wisdom, it is an analysis of the human condition ad beyond, an exploration which can arise once material necessities have been satisfied.

My work is, henceforth, the reflection of the search and the journey from the experience of my soul.
I utilize the path that I have taken as a mirror for the soul of mankind through the use of natural shape and the flow of freedom, and the vacancy of self-sacrifice.
I don’t want to be influenced when painting, when I paint I just want to be free and follow my emotional world which is a parallel of societies.
I just want to draw out any kind of emotion and shout in silence through my pictures.
I want others to feel, I want everybody to switch on their sensations and develop their own sensitivity in synergy with mine. I would like everybody to feel the energy all around us.
This is a sensitive world which has been treated badly.

“My work is centred around themes of”:

-Crisis of human identity
-Consciousness / Unconsciousness
-Communication / Consumerism
-Sensations
-Criticism of a sick world
-Dreaming as a refuge
-all of the themes and none

For me the crowded masses of humanity contain power, fear, desire for pleasure and constraints.

There are no mistakes in art.
While we are making art we are free to fail as long we know how to deal with it. Of course, the error become a suggestion if we are aware and perceptively opened enough. This has a natural flow in children.
Of course, this error can become a hint or suggestion if our perceptions are open and we are aware enough. This happens as a natural flow in children.
We are able to stop time with art, this is the reason an artist looks younger.
While we are living our lives we make mistakes while time goes, we can’t step back! Art allowed us to stop, realise, record, think and adjust in a better way our work of art.

I usually like working spontaneously because it shows the nature of things.
I find the natural stage of things the most beautiful experience, most surprising, honest, and it opens my heart, my mind, my creativity.
I feel responsible…
I know everything starts from the first step so I endeavour to do my art as purely as possible.
Sometimes I use ideas from a sketch but I find most fascinating working without plans.
I have decided to live full time with my art because I want to experience it all the way and to deal with life by living with art.
That can be frustrating sometimes and there is a great deal for me to learn to balance.
All I have learned in life I give to my work of art, and what I experience in my work of art I live my life for.
My life without creativity would be incomplete.
Art for me is the meeting point of the entire universe!

I am not a painter or a sculptor but an artist that means I am a philosopher who uses not only words but also movement, colors, dimensional materials, video, photography, unrecorded feelings.
Human kind is artist.
Art is surprising, everything you see or you can’t see. It is the answer to all of life’s questioning.

My work is mainly focused on identity, but within identity there are thousands more subjects. I like playing by changing the perception of things. We are able to change people's perception with persuasion and self-convintion.

Painting
Black and white work
This is the media the artist uses more often, Attanasio’ s work is a continuation of Kandinsky’ s research and theoretical writings in art: Point and Line to Plane and The Spirituality in Art (published in 1911). Kandinsky analyses in his writings the geometrical elements which compose every painting, namely the point and the line, as well as the physical support and the material surface on which the artist draws or paints and which he calls the basic plane or BP. He doesn’t analyze them on an objective and exterior point of view, but on the point of view of their inner effect on the living subjectivity of the observer who looks at them and lets them act on his sensibility.
That is for Attanasio a source of great inspiration for the balance of his pictures.

The media most used oil on canvas but with free space to experimentation and different techniques. The black and white paintings are planned to be fitted in the environment where they are shown in.
Bright light or a foggy darkness, my paintings can be shown in any environment with any light.
The paintings changes according to the intensity of light.
Because the definition of colour is light, he wants to give light the role of putting colour and atmosphere into the paintings.
The result of the crowded masses is the mirror of reality and Attanasio’ s own life.

Mixed media

Attanasio is a courios traveller and he usually uses his travels to learn different expressions and embody them into himself.
The artist’s home city has been undertaken by different nations. This is an important factor of his needed to transformation and experimentation.
The mixed media it’s influenced by periods and surroundings environment, it changes when changes the country I am living in, the people I am meeting, the feelings and memories, the material I find in the street, the financial personal situation, etc..

Sculpture
I find it an incredibly important media because I can have a physical relationship to the piece I am making and exploring the third dimension. Material used: clay, plaster, wax, fiber-glass, wood, marble, found-objects. The sculpture connects with his paintings, the cowded masses wants to leave the canvas gaining volume.

Photography
“Photography is an immediate media”. Usually I plan really deeply my shoots. When I leave my house I am aware that even junk can have an order in composition and have valuable elements. The artist will be the medium, the one who will choose spots in the street deign of a gallery. Some other time Attanasio’ s photography has a sort of stage set with and acting. Attanasio works with manual-digital photography using various editing programme.

Movement of the body and action performance

The body is the most essential “tool” we have to express our creativity, we can use it differently than usual (ordinary movements), we can translate our thoughts or our freedom in movement and make the spectator understanding and feeling.
In 2005 the artist designed: sinergyes between movement and energies. It consists in five steps, that the performer go through hen in action. from the beginning of the movement until the end of a performance piece. (catalogue + videos available).
The artist is very much inspired by greek and asian philosophy, south American shamanism, body and mind exploration, very inspired by Alejandro Jodorosky’ s “Panic theatre”. He is performing with three more components. The quartet is called THE WAY OUT. The crew is formed by Riccardo Attanasio, Russell Bond (coreographer, musician, performer), Cat Weswtwood (dancer) Matthew Grisby Smith (musician, performer).
The music is inspired by John Cage and some of the moves by Merce Cunningam, Isadora Duncan, Butho, Contact improvisation, 5 rhythms, Dankira tehwagi (martial art and dance from Ethiopia), Chi Kong (martial art). All is mixed with extravagance involving on stage all the different skills of the four performers.

Poetry and thoughts
Direct or indirect it may be philosophy, a theory, a feeling, a need to say something relating to the inner world or the outstanding one. Poetic thoughts are the spoken side of the visual. Often the poetry is improvised, without any plans. All my art is founded by structured improvisation and Constance.

music
I am not a practising musician nevertheless a musician but I make and records sounds sometimes as background of my poetry which on music take the form of a contemporary rap and spoken words.

I strongly believe that art is vast as the universe, everything is linked and one feeling can have thousands different ways of expression.
