Vita / Lebenslauf:
Born: Memphis, Tennessee
Lives: Boston, Massachusetts

Brian Bishop is an artist whose paintings attempt to pinpoint the overlap between opposites such as the intangible and the tangible, the conceptual and the visceral, the forgotten and the remembered. Some of his inspiration comes from snapshot photography, surveillance films, and portraiture. His work also addresses memory, in particular, as it is explored through the medium of photography and asks the following question: does the moment captured by the camera represent truth or fiction?

He attended The School of Visual Arts in New York, NY; Memphis College of Art in Memphis, TN [BFA 1993]; and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI [MFA 1995]. Prior to joining the faculty at Framingham State College in 2008, he taught at The University of Alabama, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The University of Memphis, and Memphis College of Art. In addition to his teaching experience he has also served as Director and Curator of the Art Workers Union/Plan B Gallery in Memphis and as Director of Exhibitions at Memphis College of Art. He currently serves as chair of the Services to Artist Committee of the College Art Association.

His work has been exhibited in 22 states including solo exhibitions at the Cheekwood Museum of Art in Nashville, TN; The University of Delaware in Newark, DE; Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, AR; Artspace in Raleigh, NC; Georgetown University in Washington, DC; and at Youngblood Gallery in Atlanta, GA. His work has also been shown in group exhibitions at The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC; Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA; David Klein Gallery in Birmingham, MI; Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA; Rawspace, New York, NY; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) in Winston-Salem, NC; The Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington, DE; Zeitgeist Gallery in Nashville, TN; Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art in Jacksonville, FL; City Without Walls in Newark, NJ; The Art Museum of The University of Memphis; Musawwir Art Space in Midland Park, NJ and the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, CT .
