Vita / Lebenslauf:
Artistic Process

Why should art be perfect if human beings aren’t?

After exploring hyperrealism for nearly 10 years, my pieces have become more and more based on a personal artistic research. The desire to create, in immediate reaction to what surrounds me, has manifested itself.

The image is no longer an end, but a way or tool to allow me to convey emotions. I am convinced of the need to revisit our collective identity, without disowning it, but by questioning the great founding events of our history and all the beliefs borne of it. Neither completely illustrative, nor abstract, my pieces express a great paradox.

Through my work, I try to create visual poems or melodies by creating rhythm, variations and using text fragments within the pieces themselves, consciously or not. I would like the viewers to become aware of their actions and the issuing consequences. I want to encourage people to question their beliefs and values. At first glance, one may get the impression that my pieces are dark but a longer look would reveal light and hope.

The graphic and visual elements I use are found in several of my pieces, thus creating a world of my own. I work with “humble” materials and use collage, impasto, scraping, tearing and techniques. Found objects also contribute to the unique aspect of my work. I make these objects my own by giving them a new use. The three-dimensional element also adds a dynamic aspect and contributes to either denature the object or bring a better understanding of man and his environment.

By mixing glues and pigments, sometimes adding sand, ash or earth, I then find my medium, the matter through which I express form, depth, shadow and light. I work with tools but also using my own body.

The formats I use have gotten bigger: this new size allows me to be more spontaneous in expressing the subject and get more physically involved in the creative process. Spontaneous movements give me the sort of satisfaction I used to get from playing music.

Construction and deconstruction stand side by side, in fragile equilibrium (much like life and death, beauty and ugliness, hot and cold…), and each stroke or tear in the piece make it, but could also break it.

The use of acrylic and pastel is recurrent in my body of work, the first allowing for a minimalist touch, the latter bringing it back to the original sketch, which is actually at the root of my artistic journey. I use black and white, earth tones and the occasional touch or colour, also to add a dynamic touch in my compositions.

The use of typography in my work goes back to my studies as a graphic designer. Through this, I try to conserve the simplicity of the subject and to have a clear communication axel. There still are some figurative elements, but they are kept at their simplest. I do not want to go back to photorealism.

Installation is a new way for me to approach subjects. By staging my work and using space, I wish to use senses other that sight. For me, art should not only rely on the sense sight, but on all of the senses.
