The amount of energy potentially available from photosynthesis for the support of all animal life, after deducting what is consumed by the respiratory processes of the plants themselves, is known as net primary production (NPP). A 1986 study concluded that humans were already using directly, co-opting, or displacing nearly 40 percent of the potential annual NPP of the earth's land surfaces. This leaves less than 60 percent for other species, for improving the lives of the 80 percent of humanity that enjoys only 20 percent of the wealth, and for meeting the needs of increasing human numbers.
If current patterns of consumption are maintained and the earth's human population doubles as is projected to occur within the next 35 years, we would require some 80 percent of NPP just to maintain living standards at current unequal levels. Only 20 percent of NPP would be available to support all other non-plant life.
Corporations have emerged as the dominant organizing institution on the planet. The largest among them reaching into virtually every country of the world and exceeding most governments in size and power. The staggering scale of the concentration of economic power that is occurring is revealed in the statistics: of the world’s 100 largest economies, 50 are corporations. The aggregate sales of the world’s 10 largest corporations in 1991 exceed the aggregate GNP of the world’s 100 smallest countries. 70 percent of world trade is controlled by just 500 corporations, and a mere 1 percent of all multinationals own half the total stock of foreign direct investment.
People around the world today are connected by brand name consumer products as much as by anything else: It is a strategy to increase domination through ubiquity.
Through Subvertising, I hope to redefine and even reclaim our environment from the corporate monoculture. I believe it imperative for us to rectify the inverse relationship between consumerism and the environment.
