My work serves several purposes; one is as an outlet that allows me to speak about my environment in a visual way; the other is as a catharsis for emotions. All of my images reflect the way I experience the world, often incorporating a story about a place I visited or an event I experienced.
Many of my images develop from a basic photograph. I enjoy manipulating them through various processes as they evolve. Some seem to be finished after a single transformation while others require that I take them a stage further through rephotographing and other steps such as Polaroid Manipulation. I don’t reprocess just because I can. I feel that there has to be a reason for taking an image to the next step. For instance, I thought about scanning my Polaroids into the computer as a method of enlarging them, but decided that wasn’t a good enough reason. They would then lose their uniqueness and tactile qualities.
Laura Jackett is an alumnus of SUNY Geneseo and Buffalo State College and recently completed her Master of Fine Arts in Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. Laura has taught at various colleges including Ithaca, Wells, and Lock haven University of Pennsylvania as well as many workshops at such places as The Smithsonian Institution, The Corcoran Museum of Art and The George Eastman House.
Laura uses various techniques to produce her artworks including Printmaking, Alternative Photographic Processes, Bookbinding and Computer Manipulation. She has exhibited and published her artwork nationally, earning a number of awards. Her work can currently be seen at The Italian American Community Center and The Association of University Women Gallery in Rochester, New York.
